FAQs

FAQs about Studying in the USA

Why should I study in the USA?
Studying abroad in the USA can be a life-changing experience, as it ranks among the top 10 places to study. The country offers highly specialized technical schools for various fields, such as seed agriculture in Wyoming and arctic science in Alaska. With a diverse population and a rich history of immigration, every state in the USA has something unique to offer. The academic year typically runs from September to June.
In the USA, an undergraduate degree includes core courses, a major, a minor, and electives, typically lasting three to four years. The four years are divided into Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior years. Professional Master’s Degrees can take 1 to 3 years, while Academic Master’s Degrees last for 2 years. Doctorate or PhD studies may take up to 8 years. Students earn their degrees by accumulating course credits rather than through final examinations, with continuous assessment of marks and grades.
An F-1 Visa allows international students to enter the US and study at institutions certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). The duration of stay depends on the enrolled program, and students are expected to complete their degree before the visa expires. After graduation, students can apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT) to work in the US for up to 12 months, with an additional two years available for STEM graduates. Requirements for the F-1 Visa include institution certification, full-time enrollment, English proficiency, sufficient funding, a valid passport, and home country residency.

The application process is generally similar across US universities, though some elements may vary by program and level. There are two main intakes: fall and spring. Required documents typically include:

  • Class X, XII, and Bachelor’s degree mark sheets (if applicable)
  • At least two academic reference letters from professors
  • Two letters of recommendation from employers for those with work experience
  • A resume
  • Statement of Purpose (SOP)
  • Essays (if required by the university)
  • Scorecards for GMAT, GRE, IELTS, or TOEFL
  • A portfolio for certain programs
  • Certificates or achievements
  • Proof of funds
